Getting your pet food through various delivery services is becoming increasingly popular. The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in exponential growth in home delivery services. In addition to Amazon deliveries, many animal clinics begin to offer this service as did several pet stores. So what are the pros and cons?

  • Depending on your area, one practical consideration is the economic needs of your local pet store. Urban areas have a wide variety of stores to choose from when shopping for pet supplies while some smaller rural areas may only have a family-run business. This is definitely a consideration for nurturing the economic health of your area. After all, when we need something urgently, we will want those stores to be open and available.
  • Amazon is only one of the home delivery services encouraging you to “subscribe and save.” In other words, if you set up a regular delivery service, you are likely to receive a 5-10% discount on your pet food. However, you’ll be asked to set up a frequency (i.e. every four weeks), the quantity you want to order, and the specific type (not just the brand, but the flavor profile). Subscribe and save plans are not as flexible when it comes to an immediate need, so be aware of this.
  • Because of this point, it’s recommended you order an immediate shipment to stock up and set up your subscription and save after that. This will ensure you don’t have a gap in food supply for your pets.
  • Under the heading, “Buyer Beware” you should note not all online sellers are shipping authentic products, but cheap knock-offs. Ordering from a highly reputable online seller is important to protect against this. Read their reviews before agreeing to order through them.
  • Always inspect your delivery when it arrives. If it’s been opened or tampered with, contact your supplier immediately. They will often send you a replacement at no additional cost to you.

Subscribe and save pet food keeps cars off the road, can save you a trip to the store, and even save money over time. Balance this against the business you would be providing your local pet store and make the decisions that are right for you. In the meantime, it’s a relatively new service worth looking into.
